- A pattern of behaviour that you do over and over
- Often unconscious of it
- Often learned and rewarded over time
GIVING UP BAD HABITS
Stage 1 - Pre-recognition stage
- Don't believe they have a problem
- Usually a trigger sets off stage 2. eg. Becoming quite sick from smoking
Stage 2 - Recognition stage
- No action taken yet, but start to contemplate taking action
- How am I going to go about doing this?
- Motivation - Do I really want to give up this habit?
- Benefits vs Costs - write a list of each and compare, more benefits gives more motivation
- Self confidence - do I really feel I can do this?
Stage 3 - Planning
- I want to change, I'm motivated - How do I do it?
- Have a plan
- What method to use
- Manage your environment - less temptation
- Make a public commitment
- Use the power of your mind, visualise the outcome.
- Eg. Not smoking anymore
Stage 4 - Action
- Simply putting your plan into action
- Don't put off starting
- Without action all the planning and intention is dreaming
Stage 5 - Maintenance
- Analyse and avoid triggers eg. Going to a bar with friends who smoke
- Reward progress
- Learn from setbacks
